Be careful of spending your time on that. I spent a couple days making a drum track for that fella and never heard a peep from him after that.

Not cool.

I'm always open to collaboration. saemskin & I traded remixes, and we tried to start up a more substantial collab but it sort of ran aground if I recall... I tend to have a lot of different things going on what with my own music, a couple of regular collaborators locally, gigs, butoh dance stuff, etc....

I definitely enjoy working with others - it's a good way to learn and also focus on your strengths rather than try to do everything,

At the end you could drop the guitar part again along with some heavy drums, would make a nice climax IMO.

Which trashy drums? the drum machine beat at the beginning or the real drums in the middle?

The new version of FLStudio supports side chaining with the Fruity Limiter. There is a tutorial on it at the FL GURU site.

It's the 2nd one down. I tried it and it works WAY better than the Peak Controller technique ever did. You can really dial in some heavy pumping.

Here's an update view of the UI so far:

http://zetacentauri.com/images/screenshots/GranulaTron0.25.png

It's starting to make sound, but only some of the controls work, it uses a billion percent of the CPU, and produces some of the most awfully ear-piercing sounds, but it's progressing. Still have a lot to figure out and a lot to learn.

Been reading the book Microsound by Curtis Roads. It's very thorough.

Yeah, a sudden change can sometimes be exactly what a song needs, it just needs to be necessary to the song's narrative. I'm not saying you have to telegraph every transition or make everything smooth and obvious and happy.

I love the flies, and I actually think the current song slinks quite well from the flies into the next part. Listening to it again, I think the burbly background noises during the second part actually evoke the flies well enough you don't need to bring them back in. Now that I've given it a second listen, I think the track works really well at present, and it wasn't the actual transition I was reacting to, it was just the thing that I latched onto when trying to form my comments.

Giving it a closer listen, I think I still have 2 comments:
1. This is likely just a personal preference, but most of the guitar and drums in the second section do not say "dark figure" to me - at least not when they get really big. They seem darker and more consistent with the beginning in the interludes when they are slower and quieter. The crashy cymbals and brighter guitar chords just sound more determined, or triumphant, or something that is a contrast with the beginning that is not really explained for me.

2. It seems obviously cut off/unfinished, which I am assuming is due to its being a work-in-progress, not intentional. I think some kind of conclusion that helps complete the story and explain where it is going will help.

I hope this is helpful.

Maybe I can extend the flies in the background for texture until I bring in the big drums, this is when it has risen and growing.
Maybe big actions of narrative music should negate smaller actions from previous scenes.

Yes, I see what you're saying, but what if they are sickening flies, festering with maggots around a big black emptiness, and what emerges is something dirty, cold and haunting. The focus is no longer on the flies, or the darkness, but at the rigid figure slinking out of nothing, taking shape, and growing over me. The flies are just where we began, the figure will never return there, because the desire doesn't drive it there.
